Pentland Ferry
Ampac protects Pentland Ferries MV Alfred in the UK
Clyde & Solway Systems based in South Ayrshire, Scotland, BAFE SP203-1 accredited Land & Marine Specialist Engineering Company recently replaced a problematic fire detection system on board a roll on roll off Catamaran Ferry operating in the Scottish Isles:
- The 85.4m Pentland Ferry MV Alfred operates year-round to the Orkney Islands across the Pentland Firth from Gills Bay in Caithness to St Margaret’s Hope in South Ronaldsay, Orkney in some of the harshest conditions in the north of Scotland. The Fire Detection System fitted from new was not up to the task and becoming problematic. It was time for an updated modern, robust & reliable fire detection system.
- Design and Consultation Support: Ampac went beyond providing hardware solutions by offering invaluable design and consultation support. The team worked closely with Clyde & Solway Systems to ensure that the chosen fire safety solutions were aligned with the project's unique requirements & deadlines.
The Challenge
The Ferry based and operating in the Scottish Isles was due into Cammell Laird, Birkenhead Dry Dock for maintenance. It was planned that during this short period, the Marine Fire Detection system would be replaced. With critical deadlines looming, the challenge was to complete this work within the set time so that the ferry could return to safe operation, providing the Scottish Isles with a critical supply & passenger lifeline.
The Solution
Ampac's Marine Approved FireFinder Plus 4 Loop control panel was the obvious choice allowing for the easy replacement to be completed on time. This not only saved costs but also reduced the complexity of the upgrade process. Along with the Marine FireFinder Plus, Clyde & Solway Systems also installed and commissioned Ampac’s Marine SmartView GUI Package to aid the Captain & Safety Personnel aboard the vessel to identify the exact location via an LED Display of any activation or fault onboard the vessel, something they did not have with the previous system.
Ampac's solution offered Clyde & Solway Systems and Pentland Ferries a cost-effective, time-sensitive, and highly adaptable approach to update and replace a failing system.
